About this globe
The MESSENGER spacecraft orbited Mercury from 2011 to 2015 and produced the first complete map of the innermost planet. Its surface records billions of years of impacts, almost untouched by weather or tectonics.
The giant Caloris basin — one of the largest impact scars in the solar system — dominates one hemisphere.
How the data was captured
Photographed by the MESSENGER spacecraft's cameras through multiple color filters while orbiting Mercury from 2011 to 2015 — the first spacecraft ever to orbit the innermost planet.
