About this globe
Some of the heaviest meteorites ever recovered, from NASA's copy of the Meteoritical Society's records, sized by mass on a log scale. The map is really two maps: where rocks fall (everywhere, evenly) and where humans find them (deserts and ice, where dark stones stand out and nothing buries them).
Antarctica and the Sahara dominate not because they attract meteorites, but because they preserve them.
How the data was captured
Records kept by the Meteoritical Society: every specimen on this globe was physically found, collected, and weighed — by expeditions on Antarctic ice, desert travelers, farmers, and museum curators.
