About this globe
Mapped by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, which has been photographing the Moon from ~50 km up since 2009. The dark patches are maria — ancient lava plains — and almost all of them face Earth; fold the globe and the far side is a pale, crater-saturated world we never see.
Look for the bright ray systems splashing out of young craters like Tycho and Copernicus.
How the data was captured
Photographed by the cameras on NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, circling the Moon about 50 km above the surface since 2009 — thousands of orbital passes stitched into one seamless map.
