About this globe
Venus hides under an unbroken deck of sulfuric-acid clouds, so NASA's Magellan mission mapped it with radar between 1990 and 1994. This globe shows that radar view of the surface: volcanic plains, highland continents, and pancake domes found nowhere else.
It is the hottest planetary surface in the solar system — around 465 °C, hot enough to melt lead.
How the data was captured
No camera can see this surface — Venus's clouds are opaque. NASA's Magellan spacecraft mapped it by radar between 1990 and 1994, bouncing radio pulses through the clouds and timing the echoes; the colors here show elevation.
